A step-by-step walkthrough of visiting the Charleston Field Office — from the parking lot to the waiting room. For interview preparation strategy (what questions to expect, how to answer them), see our Charleston Interview Prep page.
Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointment. The office is at 1821 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard — a standalone building set back from the road. Free parking is available on-site, but spaces fill quickly during oath ceremony days.
You'll go through airport-style security at the entrance — metal detector and bag screening. Leave weapons, sharp objects, and large bags in your car. Cell phones are allowed but must remain on silent throughout your visit.
Present your appointment notice (Form I-797C) and a valid government-issued photo ID. The receptionist will confirm your appointment and direct you to the waiting area.
The waiting room has basic seating. Wait times vary — 10 minutes to over an hour depending on the day's schedule. Bring water and something to read. If you have young children, plan accordingly — there are no childcare facilities.
An officer will call your name and escort you to an interview room. Marriage-based green card interviews typically last 15–30 minutes. Naturalization interviews include the civics and English tests and usually take 20–40 minutes. Bring all original documents referenced in your application.
The officer may approve your case on the spot, issue a Request for Evidence (RFE), or schedule a follow-up. You'll receive a written notice before you leave. If approved for naturalization, you may be scheduled for an oath ceremony the same day or at a future date.

Was nervous about going to my citizenship interview, but the Homeland Security Security guards were very down to earth. I enjoyed talking to them. They were very friendly and welcoming. The officer that interviewed me was straight to the point and blew thru the interview in 15mins. It was all a very quick and stressless process. Relax, and take a breath. It's not as scary as ppl make it out to be.
This is the best government experience I’ve ever had and probably will never have again. The officer was super nice and the ceremony was very well organized. I’m still amazed. Thank you
The 3 Security Officers were extremely helpful, witnessed them helping with driving directions to a visitor as he left the lobby. They were kind and professional. My wife's interview did hit a snag but she indicated the young USCIS female officer that interviewed her was very professional and polite and helpful. We hope her case can be resolved soon and she will be a citizen, after 37 yrs of being a resident alien. There is still a thrill to me to see the auditorium where the Citizenship Oath takes place, Great big US Flag and some pomp and circumstance. As a 60 yr old vet, it is nice to see. Thank You, T House Goose Creek SC
The office is small and quaint. The officers at the front were so welcoming and pleasant. It was so refreshing to deal with such warm personalities at the front. The office felt very cold 🥶 though so ensure you have a jacket. Parking was easy. Lots of space. Cameras everywhere, so you're safe from the parking lot to the lobby. My husband used the bathroom and said it was clean. That's good. Overall, 5 stars for service rendered, cleanliness of the building, and those wonderful officers at the entrance. It's a pity I didn't get their names.
My naturalization experience has been wonderful! Upon arrival for my interview, I was greeted by two very kind security officers. They said good morning and made check-in a breeze. The interview with Officer Brennan was a pleasure. She was easy to speak with and very professional. This process went much quicker and smoother than anticipated!
