The STEM OPT Extension gives F-1 graduates with degrees in science, technology, engineering, or math an extra 24 months of work authorization on top of the standard 12-month OPT (Optional Practical Training) period. That's a total of 36 months of work authorization after graduation.
You apply using Form I-765, and your employer has to be enrolled in E-Verify. There's also a formal training plan (Form I-983) that your employer and you fill out together, describing how the job relates to your STEM degree.
For STEM graduates trying to stay in the U.S. long-term, this extension is often the bridge to an H-1B visa or other work-based immigration path. The H-1B lottery is unpredictable, and having 3 years of OPT gives you up to three chances to be selected in the annual lottery instead of just one.
- Your degree must be on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List
- Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify — no exceptions
- You must file the extension before your initial 12-month OPT expires
- You can't be unemployed for more than 150 days total during the full 36-month OPT period
- If you have multiple STEM degrees, you may be eligible for more than one STEM OPT extension over your lifetime
