Diversity Visa Lottery

Also known as: DV Lottery, Green Card Lottery

visa-types

Definition

A lottery that gives 55,000 green cards per year to people from countries with low U.S. immigration rates. Free to enter, but odds are slim.

What this actually means

The Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery is a U.S. government program that gives out 55,000 immigrant visas (green cards) each year through a random drawing. It's designed to bring in immigrants from countries that don't send many people to the U.S., which is why it's called the "diversity" visa.

Every year, millions of people from eligible countries enter the lottery for free through the State Department website. Winners are selected randomly, and if you're chosen, you get the opportunity to apply for a green card — but winning the lottery is just the first step, not a guaranteed green card.

Why it matters

For people from countries without strong family or employment ties to the U.S., the DV Lottery may be one of the only realistic paths to a green card. It's one of the few immigration programs that doesn't require a U.S. sponsor — you apply on your own.

That said, the odds are steep. Typically 10–15 million people enter each year for 55,000 spots. And being selected doesn't mean you're done — you still need to complete an application, pass a background check, attend an interview, and meet all admissibility requirements.

Where this comes up

  • Annual DV Lottery registration, which typically opens in October for visas issued two years later.
  • Consular processing interviews for DV Lottery winners.
  • Adjustment of status applications for winners already in the U.S. on a valid visa.

Key things to know

  • It's completely free to enter. Any website charging you to "apply" for the DV Lottery is a scam.
  • Nationals of high-immigration countries (like Mexico, India, China, and the Philippines) are not eligible. The list of excluded countries changes each year.
  • You need at least a high school education or two years of qualifying work experience to be eligible.
  • If selected, you must complete the process before the end of the fiscal year (September 30). There are no extensions. Miss the deadline and your selection expires.
  • Your spouse and unmarried children under 21 can be included as derivatives on your DV application.
